PLAY THAT FUNKY MUSIC

Mighty funky bass tone!!!

I bloody love this song.
Really, who doesn’t?

If you haven’t danced drunk to this song at some stage of your life, you’re probably lying.

I played corporate and wedding shows for a few years which was seriously so much fun. I found myself jamming out and improvising over this song differently at each gig. It’s just awesome to groove to.

I had endless riffs and ideas that I wanted to compile into one huge take. This took a really long time to remember and arrange every part in order to make it flow.

If you listen carefully, they are all slightly different.

I initially recorded this version with a session bassist behind the controls near to where I lived at the time. But me being me, I wasn’t happy with my playing and articulation of the delivery. I needed to practice and tighten up enough until I got it feeling right, and up to my standards.

This video had also been filmed previously to what you’re seeing, but I wasn’t feeling it in my performance either so that version was never used.

My strive for quality can be enjoyable and exhausting at the same time.

I wanted a specific, original tone for this cover. I’m using my beautiful Ernie Ball Music Man Sterling 2001 Bass, with Ernie Ball slinky 45/105 strings in standard tuning.

The signal chain is as follows: Bass direct into my Avalon U5 DI, straight out into a Sansamp Bass Driver DI. We re-amped though my Mark Bass amp and cab, and captured it with a Steve Slate Digital Mic. Just to be sure I created something original, we then re-amped again through a Mesa Boogie Subway DI bass pedal.

In my opinion, the original sound comes mostly from the Slate mic and the Mesa pedal. Also the aggression in how it was recorded add to this.

I loved playing on this, and it was a real test for me to be physically able to get through this track.

I have transcribed 6 riffs with notation of which I think are good exercises to learn, and I will film a breakdown tuition video for these in the near future.

I really hope you enjoy it.
