INCUBUS BASS TONE- HOW I RECORDED STELLAR
Stellar by Incubus!!!
What an epic track!
Spending the day with mates who happen to be great musos is awesome. This cover was filmed and recorded at my friend Steve’s studio, an hour out from Melbourne.
I have decided to split this video into two different versions. This version focuses more on me and the bass. The other will explain more about the guys and how we created this cover.
I knew exactly what tone I wanted for this track. As per usual I premeditated my sound extensively before the recording. I’m sold on the fact that my Warwick Custom Corvette was the right bass for this track.
This time, I went through my pedal board first, as opposed to running directly into the Avalon U5. I coloured and compressed the signal then ran direct from there.
I took recordings from the Avalon U5 and my Mark Bass Cab. If you’re able to understand your gear you can have a fair idea of what sound you’re going for prior to the recording itself.
This can save painful time-wasting in the studio especially when there is a whole band to capture.
Matt Bartlem has done amazingly well mixing this track.
I think the bass tone is amazing; it was also relatively easy to achieve. Warwick Basses always seem to deliver effortlessly when it comes to tone. Mic’s and mic pre’s alter the sound, but 95 percent of it comes from the eq, the gear, and how it’s configured.
I Love Dirk Lance’s playing; he commented on this cover on instagram and having the original creator comment positively really made my day.

I really hope you enjoy it.
