HOW I GOT THAT SOUND - A PHIL COLLINS TONE VIDEO
Let’s Talk Bass Tone!!!
How did I record my Phil Collins bass cover? How did I get that sound?
I’m pretty stoked with an awesome start to this project. It’s been such an insanely difficult, yet very rewarding.
I love recording, it’s as exciting for me to think about how I’ll record each track as much as the playing itself.
This was actually my first ever talking video so I'm really happy with how it came out. The blooper reel from this is bloody hilarious. I was so nervous and unsure of myself.
For a musician and audio engineer, gear selection and how it's used are critical factors in the final sound. Although not hugely evident to the average listener, this plays a massive part in what you hear. It really “makes or breaks” what gets translated to your ears.
I love that I got to use the Earthquaker Devices Afterneath pedal. It’s so cool.
I met Juan Alderete (The Mars Volta) here in Melbourne at a small clinic showing this brand, as soon as I saw the pedal demo I got one.
I'm pretty lucky to have had the opportunity to work with some great audio and mastering engineers around Australia. Not only have they helped me understand the process of production, but they have helped show me how to obtain a good sound.
This, with my own knowledge of instruments, is the reason I am able to do this.
Some musicians like myself, really enjoy both ends of the spectrum. For others the studio is a foreign world and they would prefer to rely solely on the engineer.
Regardless, I absolutely hope this video offers you some insight.
The Avalon U5 and the REDDI are a killer combo.
Thanks so much to Daniel Nolan for your skills in putting this together.
I really hope you enjoy it!
